Likely founded in 1825, the distillery still operates largely as it did in the 19th century. Edradour is the only distillery in Scotland that maintains the style of old farm-based operations. Edradour is a small gem in the Scottish whisky landscape. Until recently, Edradour was officially Scotland's smallest distillery, still producing its whisky in an old and traditional manner. Twelve casks are produced per week.

Since 2002, Edradour has been independently owned again, with Andrew Symington, founder of the independent bottler Signatory, as its proprietor – a true whisky luminary. Since the takeover, a number of new bottlings have been introduced. Edradour's peatiest malts are released under the name Ballechin.
